"This picture is of me trying on my new splashtop in the Agecroft
club colours. I learned to row (badly, some might say) at Bristol University in 1969
and did a bit at Birmingham RC the year after graduating. Then the usual distractions
took over (family, jobs, houses ...) but finally, prompted by my elder daughter's coxing
at college, I got back on the water in the autumn of 2001, rowing in the novice crew at
Agecroft. We rowed the Head of the River in April and won some pots in the summer of 2002
and I got a point, but the main thing is that I'm enjoying it more than I can explain! My
younger daughter is now following her sister into the brigade of smallish sedentary beings
with attitude, so it seems that we're turning into a boatie family."
James Lee
This photo by sportraiture.com shows James coxing at Evesham Regatta in 2005.
James is a cox for Warwick Boat Club in the West-Midlands but often finds himself
in other clubs boats too.
Although he does not actually row (and doesn't particularly want to), he is hugely
involved in the sport - "it just took over my life". Aged 19, he has been on his club
committee for 2 years as well as being on the social committee. He is also an "IA"
qualified coach and currently undergoing umpiring training. Due to his interest
in Events Management, James has also assisted in organising Warwick Regatta as well
as organising a few of his own events including charity ergathons and coxing seminars.
Soon to join Bournemouth University, James looks forward to many many many more years in the sport.

"This is the definitive photo of my racing
career -- about ten strokes to go at the 2000 World
Championships in Zagreb. We're at about a 45 and
rowing at 3/4 slide but the Brits ahead of us are in
deep trouble (I'm bow of the Canadian boat behind Ed
Winchester). I started rowing at McGill University In
Montreal in 1992 and have been posting to RSR since
1994. After ten years at McGIll, I now study
ubiquinone biosynthesis in plant mitochondria--well on
the way to knowing everything about nothing."

"This was taken in October 1997 racing the masters 1x at the Head of the
Schuylkill Regatta in Philadelphia. I have been rowing since 1967. You can
find me racing the masters circuit every summer in Ontario, Canada, then the
fall circuit on the east coast. When I am not rowing I am usually off
cycling (road or mountain) somewhere."

"This picture was taken at Henley Veterans 2000. I am at stroke and my partner, Paul, is watching
the Nassovia Hoechst crew getting away from us! I started rowing at school in 1967, was in the GB
Junior 8+ in Yugoslavia in 1971 and rowed for Exeter University in 1973. Apart from racing for the
Army against the Navy and the Air Force in 1980, I did not row again until 1998.
I now scull at Hexham RC where Paul and I have enjoyed some success in local veteran events. I have
recently joined Tyne RC to row in eights because Hexham has no eights (or space to store them).
I have an Instructor's Award and have just gained a Bronze Instructors Award.
Some stats for the curious: born 1 Dec 1953, height 1.96m (6' 4"), weight 95kgs (~205lbs);
Concept2 bests: 2k - 6' 33.4", 5k - 17' 25.2", 10k - 36' 44.8"
Hexham RC has a new website.

"This picture is taken from Dartmouth Regatta 1999 just after we won the
barrell rolling contest! We'd won in a four the previous day, but lost out
badly in the eight.
The club I raced with was Cambridge '99 RC where I started rowing, and I'm
the one with the long curly hair and the big grin, the others being
long-time club stalwarts."

"I started rowing in 1994 for Shrewsbury High School, and then moved
on to Strathclyde University where I managed to dig myself in deeper and
deeper until now in my final year at the age of 23 I umpire, coach, cox,
row (when I'm not injured - I'm a little accident prone!), serve on our
club committee and the SARA executive, and am writing a regatta draw
program for my final year project. Only in desperate measures do I ever
resort to sculling, at which time, everyone else desperately tries to
get out of my way!"

"In this picture, I'm on the right, and my '99 pair partner Aaron, is on
the left. This was taken at the '99 California Henley. Aaron and I
have been rowing together in one form or another since 1993.
I began rowing my freshman year in college, in the fall of 1991 at
University of California, Irvine. I ended up "redshirting" that year,
due to a long bout with mono. As a result, I had eligibility to row for
five years at UCI; 2 years under Dan Emrich, and 3 years under Duvall
Hecht (Gold, 1956 USA 2-). Our most successful year while I was at UCI
was probably 1995. Since graduating, I've competed at the '96 and '97
US Club Nationals in the 2- and the 4+, at the '-96 Canadian Henley in
the 2-, as well as several local (west coast) regattas; all with other
UCI alumni. I currently work full time as a Mechanical Engineer for
Boeing in Seal Beach, CA. I still row occasionally, usually with other
UCI alumni, and at the Long Beach Rowing Association. When I'm not
rowing, I enjoy whitewater rafting and kayaking, backpacking, and
mountain biking. Before rowing, I was a competitive swimmer for about 9
years."

"(Rare photo of me with my eyes open!!).
Brief rowing history - I started rowing when at Cambridge (Peterhouse) back in 1990.
After graduation I moved to London and joined Twickenham in 1994. After stints as club
Secretary and Captain, I took up umpiring, then moved to Molesey Boat Club and bought
myself a nice little Carl Douglas single. As well as causing regular trouble on the
Tideway Slug, I occasionally write drivel for Ed Hewitt, which he humours me by
publishing on Row2k. I'm also the press officer for the Thames Regional Rowing Council
and the Head of the River Fours; Chairman of the Race committe for Twickenham Regatta and
I've done commentary at Henley Women's reagtta, BUSA, the Home Countries regatta, EUSA
and Nat Champs . On top of which I've worked as the rowing press officer at Henley Royal
since 2003 and they've roped me in to doing a daily newsletter at World Champs at Dorney
this summer.... must learn to say no..."
